She entered the music industry at an early age winning local contests by when she was 10 years old and making her first recording at 14. The year 1985 saw her signing with Rounder Records. Her first solo album came out in 1987. Then, she was invited to join Alison Krauss Union Station, which is the group she performs together. Her first album as a collective with this group came out in 1989.
